Last week, we have received our title for the blog this week about any movie you love on making review on it. After conducting some discussion with the group members, we have decided to make review on Paskal The Movie. The first rank movie of the cinema this year in Malaysia. Twenty-two million in 15 days nationwide. So impressive !

BACKGROUND OF THE MOVIE :

PASKAL (marketed as PASKAL The Movie) is a Malaysian military action film 2018 Adrian Teh's instructions. The film starred Hairul Azreen, Ammar Alfian, Henley Hii, Taufiq Hanafi, Gambit Saifullah, Hafizul Kamal, Theebaan G, Jasmine Suraya Chin. The film is based on the true story, it tells about the torture of the Royal Malaysian Navy (TLDM), Special Force or PASKAL in the mission to recapture MV Flower Laurel merchant vessels from the Somali pirates in the Gulf of Aden in 2011. The main character in PASKAL's film was Lietenant Commander Arman Anwar Hairul Azreen) and his fellow comrdes who were sent on a special mission called 'Ops Fajar which was a true story.

 Shooting were conducted and took place in March 2018 at Kuala Lumpur, Lumut,Kota Kinabalu,Labuan, Semporna and Turkey, ended in May 2018. The movie was aired on September 27 2018. PASKAL received positive feedback and won the highest collection of RM22 million within 15 days nationwide, making it one of the highest-paid filming films in Malaysia, following Hantu Kak Limah 3 and Munafik 2.

SYNOPSIS OF THE MOVIE :

Paskal The Movie is a very patriotic storyline movie based on a true story and which tells us a story about the torture of the Royal Malaysian Navy(TLDM) Special Force or Paskal in the mission to recapture MV Flower Laurel merchant vessels from the Somali pirates in the Gulf of Aden in the year of 2011. The film revolves around seven Paskal men, who have undergone a brutal training regime, in order to become part of this navy’s elite team. At the top of this class is Lieutenant Commander Arman Anwar (Hairul Azreen). Under him are dedicated soldiers, each with his own unique personality and expertise, who are all willing to do whatever it takes to keep the country safe. 

MOVIE REVIEW :

HAIRUL AZREEN (ARMAN ANWAR)

Paskal The Movie were definitely one of our favourite Malaysian movie ever. We were surprised that the local industry is capable to produce the best action movie with a good quality and cinematography. All the actors are showing a great effort to show how Paskal is the best elite force. Hairul Azreen’s character is a charismatic leader named Arman. He did well to portraying his character. The movie was also entertaining with some comedy scenes. 

In the beginning of the movie, it shows to us that the main character Lieutenant Commander Arman Anwar (Hairul Azreen) one of the elite PASKAL team which have not receive any blessings from his own mother for his job. His mother could not accept the job that his son is one of the PASKAL team members as his own husband ( Arman Anwar's father) one of the member of PASKAL also , was killed while performing official duties for the country. This give us some sad moment scene when a mother does not give her blessings to her own son, if it's me in the movie I would not have the strength to perform my duties for the country and felt down because no support given by any family members. Other family scene would be Arman who carries responsibility as a father to Joshua's son and a patron to Joshua's wife. It would be very heartwarming to see the scene that Arman always visits Joshua's wife and the special fatherly bond between Arman with Joshua's son. Eventhough his bestfriend died in the beginning of the movie, but Joshua presence can be felt by all of us . His aura were so huge and gave a big impact to other PASKAL's team members.

The climax and plot twist of the movie begins when one of the PASKAL elite force member, Joshua were killed in a special force programme because of one member's fault which is Jeb (Ammar Alfian). Because of the mistake he have done, he have been dismissed from the PASKAL elite team and from that onwards, Jeb hold grudged towards Arman and the whole PASKAL elite team. But somewhere along the line, Arman starts having doubts about his hazardous occupation especially after losing one of his best friends, Joshua who then left his wife and son alone to survive. It doesn’t help that fellow Paskal mate Jeb (Ammar Alfian) is a bit of a rebel, making Arman’s job difficult.

AMMAR ALFIAN (JEB)

Ammar Alfian who plays the Jeb role have bring a superb job and aura of hatred to all of us as he is very antagonist and unfaithful for everything he did in each scene of the movie. Jeb is so motivated by vengeance to reclaim his throne to the PASKAL elite team until he would abet himself with the Somali pirate. The grudge he holds have make him to look very cruel.  His face expression, attitude and overall personality have make the role of character successful as a antagonist and furious person. He have his own group on this cruel agenda which includes Rudi (Amerul Afendi) and other Somalian people. For the truth, Jeb is actually working with Rudi who is the chief of the villains.

 

AMERUL ADENDI (RUDI)

Rudi has his own swagger, and if people say he looks like a Somalian pirate, we’re sold because he actually does look and act the part. Amerul Afendi (Rudi) was a pirate leader operating in the nearby area of eastern Sabah, eastern Kalimantan of Indonesia and southern Phillipines. Rudi, the pirate leader was looking a mercenary for hire especially soemone from an ex-special force as his bodyguard. He planned to take on an oil rig and take the crew member as hostage so he can demand ransom for those hostages. He attempted to escape when his planned was foiled by PASKAL using the boat he found. But, PASKAL managed to catch up to him and spray him with bullet before he can escape to the Phillipine's border where PASKAL has no jurisdiction over there. For me, Amerul Afendi managed to pull off his character perfectly as Rudi. He did it so well that everyone felt like he is an actual pirate in this movie.

To keep the story interesting, they added one mission for the ending plot that is not actually based on the actual PASKAL mission which is the third mission on the oil rig. It started out with Liutenant Arman applying for a transfer to Kulim for a new position. Suddenly, his old teammate, Jeb appears at Lily's house when he is giving Lily a visit. He then discovered that Jeb has turned into a mercenary and is working for the local pirates. He then manage to do some investigation on Jeb and the pirate and discovered they are targeting a nearby oil rig which is the workplace for Lily. He then informed his superior about this and called back his team to stop Jeb and the pirate. The whole oil rig crew was taken hostage and they demanded money in exchange for the hostage. Then his whole crew managed to secure the hostage safely one at a time. Finally, Lieutenant Arman has to face Jeb in hand to hand combat in order to save Lily and managed to take down Jeb. I liked the ending because it was so action packed and was so thrilling to watch. The actors has done their part perfectly.

CONCLUSION:
Overall from the movie watched, we were so very impressed on how huge PASKAL's team have sacrifice for the nation and country. Unbelievable, the spirits of one team is very respectful. Serve and ready to do anything for the sake of country safeness. But just one scene that really disappointed and sad to us, the scene where at the ending of the movie, where Arman just successfully finished his job , he didn't respond to what his mother were saying, as at the first place of the story his mother does not give blessings for his job. Eventhough his mother didn't support him at the first place, he should not respond that way to his mother. Unrespectful , mother will always be a mother, respect and love her for what circumstances will come to us.

To conclude, we like and really love this movie because it was done perfectly by the director and the actor that was playing their part in this movie. Maybe there was some over-the-top action in a few scene but it isn't very noticeable to the point it can make us cringe. The detail on this movie was on point. The director managed to keep the first two mission tight based on the real event while the third one is rather fictional. In short, this movie deserved 8/10 from us.
